TYLER REPORTER

Mrs. Eliza R. Hubbard, wife of Col. R. B. Hubbard, died at her home near Mount Sylvan, Smith county, on the 5th of January, in the 28th year of her age.

No word of eulogy is needed to perpetuate her memory among the host of friends who know and loved her during those early years. Her virtues are enshrined in their hearts and her open, frank, and generous nature, ever radiant with kindness and charity, will be a bright and cherished memory forever. As a child she was dutiful; as a wife, tender and affectionate; and as a mother, faithful to her loving trusts. She was the mother of six children-the three eldest of whom have long since passed through the 'beautiful gates' of Paradise.

The three youngest, so young in years, will never know a mother's love and a mother's gentle care. May the God of the orphan protect them! She was conscious of approaching death and expressed the beautiful hope that her 'troubles and afflictions would soon be over,' in that better land 'where the wicked cease from troubling and the weary are at rest.'

Our heartfelt sympathies are extended to the bereaved husband, in this hour of sad affliction.

Family legend has it that after Gip died, Amanda "hooked-up" with a salesman named Morrison who convinced her and her children to move to Missouri. Amanda's brothers were sending her money via U. S. Mail for help to support her children. Mr Morrison conspired with the local postmaster to steal the money her family was sending.
The men were convicted, and sent to prison. The Postmaster received a 7 year sentence for the mail fraud charge and Mr. Morrison received a life sentence for his part in the fraud, and her death. Amanda's cause of death was believed to be a suicide, but her children, Dan & Maggie, supposedly all had to testify at the trial and were reluctant to speak of the incident. Amanda was found dead by Carbolic Acid near the stream where she had gone to get water. There was a man's footprints in the place where she was found. This is the proof used in the trial for her murder.
Ripley County, Naylor, MO is where Steve Willis went to pick up the children after Amanda's death.
It appears that Amanda may have married a Mr Williamson after Gip died.
