George Augustus Erwin

Born 9 Jan 1854, the oldest child of Augustus O. Erwin and Emily Hudson.

George A Erwin was 5 years old when his father died. By 1870, at the age of 16, he was living with his older brother 21 year old  Thomas Cuthbert Erwin and attending school. His younger brother, 14 year old Phillip was also living there, helping TC on the farm.

George Augustus Erwin married Alice Musie Powell in Gregg county Texas on 14 Dec 1878, less than a month before his 24th birthday. Alice was 16. 

1880 Census: Date of the census was 4 June 1880 and 26 year old Gus was farming with the help of his cousin, 19 year old Cuthbert Gibson Hudson who was living with him. Also living with him was two of Alice's sisters, 20 year old Mary E. Powell, and 12 year old Edna. Gus and Alice were also new parents to their six month old son, Tommie P. Erwin who was born on 11 Nov 1879. Tommie most likely died as an infant. He was buried in Danville Cemetery but no date of death was on his headstone. On 8 November  1881 Cora Emma Erwin born. Thirteen years later George Augustus Erwin was born on 16 Oct 1894. According to George Jr's WWI draft registration on 5 June 1917, at the age of 22, he was medium height and medium build, with gray eyes and light hair. 

1900 Census: Date of census was 4 June 1900. George was working as a merchant in a general store that he owned. He was 46, Alice was 38, daughter Cora was 18, son George Jr was five, and newest child, Augustus Talmage Erwin was born 8 months earlier on 20 September 1899. According to his WWI draft registration on 12 September 1918 when he was 18 years old, he was medium height, medium build, with light hair and blue eyes.

1910 Census: Date of census was 15 April 1910. George was still working in is own generaal store. He was now 56 years old and Alice was 48. George Jr was 15, Augustus T was 10, and their youngest child, daughter Pheriba Rachel Erwin who had been born on 16 Oct 1904, was 6. Also, George's youngest brother, 29 year old Lee Hamilton, was living with him also. Lee was engage to Miss Nell Shockley at the time, and their wedding was 17 days after the census was taken. Oldest daughter Cora had married John Hampton Clay on 30 Dec 1903 and moved to Lubbock Texas. On John H Clay's WWI draft registration on 5 June 1917, he was 29 years old, tall slender, black hair and brown eyes. His occupation was a brick layer.

1920 Census: Date of census was 3 January 1920. George was now 65 years old. Alice was 57. George Jr was 23, single, and helping his father run the family store. Augustus Talmage was 19 and daughter Pheriba was 16, they were both attending school.

Emily's oldest son, George Augustus Erwin died of Uremia on 30 May 1923. He had been ill for 10 days before he died. Uremia is the result of kidney failure and can also advance to Dropsey, which is what his father died from. Symptoms are, a chill with sudden rise of temperature. Aching in muscles of the back; nausea; vomiting; hot dry skin; flushed face; contracted pupils; restlessness; mild delirium.

He was 68 years old. His wife Alice died in Lubbock Texas on 12 Jul 1952 of a coronary thrombosis, which is a blockage of the flow of blood to the heart, caused by a blood clot in a coronary artery. She was 90 years old.

 

Phillip Own Erwin

Born 12 November 1855, Phillip was Emily's second child with Augustus Erwin. 

Married Martha Josephine Holt in Smith county Texas on 26 Aug 1882. He was 26 years old. She was 19. 

He enrolled at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in Nashville, Tennessee shortly after getting married. Phillip and Josephine had two children. Both died as infants. Emily Mayde Erwin, born            8 August 1893 - died 8 Sep 1894. Infant Erwin, born 8 Jul 1895 - died 28 Jul 1895. Josephine died soon after on 6 Sep 1895.

Dr Phillip Owen Erwin then married Nettie May Phelps a year later in Smith county Texas on                      27 Jul 1896. He was 40 years old and she was 20. They had two children. Katherine, born 1898, and 

Phillip A Erwin, born 1906.

 

Bryant Erwin

Augustus Own Erwin and Emily Audrie Hudson's youngest child. Bryant Erwin was one year old when his father died. No other information on him at this time.

Ernest Hubbard Hamilton

Born: 20 Mar 1875

Married: Mary Pearl Wallace on 26 Nov 1902 in Longview Texas

1900 Census: Twenty five year old Ernest Hamilton had graduated from medical school and was living with his older brother Clarence and his family in Longview, working as a physician. 

1910 Census: Ernest and Pearl were renting a house in Kilgore Texas along with 6 year old Rayburn and Pearl's mother, 50 year old Lula Wallace. In 1913 daughter Ava was born, and in 1916 son Wallace was born. On 6 April 1917 the U.S. entered WWI and on 3 Aug 1917, Ernest enlisted in the U.S. Army Medical Corp. as a surgeon, attached to the 18th INFANTRY FIRST DIVISION. Fortunately the war ended 16 month later on 11 November 1918, however he was obligated until 27 April 1920. He was honorably discharged with the rank of Captain. 

1920 Census: The 1920 census were taken on January 6-7th, so Ernest was still serving in the army. Unfortunately, right before he was discharged, Mary Pearl died on 8 Mar 1920 two months after the census were taken. She was 40 years old. Ernest was 44.

1930 Census: On September 3, 1922 Ernest married Mabel Claire Miller, a dietician that worked in a U.S. army hospital in Pennsylvania. The census show 17 year old Ava and 15 year old Wallace living with Ernest 55, and Mabel 41, at 105 Main St in Longview Texas.

1940 Census: In 1940 63 year old Ernest and 51 year old Mabel were running a boarding house. The census list six boarders living with them. Earnest was still practicing medicine and 25 year old son Wallace was living with them, working as an electrical engineer.  Two years later Ernest moved to Dennison Texas to be the chief surgeon for the C.F Lytle Construction Company, but he died four months after moving there.

Rayburn Matthew Hamilton finished college and went to work for Dow Chemical in Houston Texas. He was 5'-10" tall, light complexion, Brown eyes & brown hair. Married Hazel Anderson, No children. Hazel had a daughter from a previous marriage, Gloria M Smith. Rayburn died 29 Jan 1987 in Houston Texas. Hazel died 17 Mar 1990.

Ava Cain Hamilton attended Texas State College For Women in Denton Texas, which is now TWU.

She married William Hunter Price on 31 Dec 1934 in Monroe Tennessee. They settled in Logansport, Louisiana, where he owned a Tailors shop and she was a welfare social worker for the state. Ava died on 17 July 1987. Hunter died 27 May 2000. No children found.

Duane Wallace Hamilton enlisted in the army on 31 Jul 1941, four months before the start of WWII. At the time of his father's death Wallace is referred to as Major Wallace Hamilton. He eventually settled in Los Angeles California where he lived until his death on 27 Oct 1992 at the age of 77.

 

Lee Hamilton 

Born: 20  June 1880

Lee was the youngest child of Emily Hudson Hamilton. She passed away on 1 March 1882, before he was two years old. His father Dr Andrew Hamilton died on 26 AUG 1889 shortly after he turned 9.

Lee married 19 year old Nell Shockley in Gregg County on 17 Apr 1910 when he was 29 years old.

According to Lee's WWI draft registration on 12 September 1918 he was tall and slender with brown hair and blue eyes. His place of employment was as a book keeper for J.E. Bagwell in Kilgore Texas. 

1910 Census:  At the time the census were taken, 1 April 1910, 29 year old Lee was single, living with his older brother George A Erwin and his family in "The village of Kilgore" Texas. Seventeen days later he married 19 year old Nell Shockley. Lee was working as a salesman in a general store.

1920 Census:  At the time of the census, 8-9 January 1920, Lee was working as a book keeper at J.E. Bagwell's retail store in Kilgore Texas. He was renting a farm. By this time, Lee and Nell had three children. Andrew Shockley 7, Hubbard Lee 6, and new born Emily. Nell's parents were also living with them. They were both 59 years old. On 2 June 1928 at 5 AM, Nells father Charles died of paralysis, at home. He had been suffering with it for two and a half years.

1930 Census:  18 April 1930, Lee and his family were now living in town in a rented house on Hendrson street. He had been out of work for 9 weeks the previous year. However, he had still earned $4,590.

Children at home now were Hubbard Lee 16, Emily 10, and Mary Lou 5. Andrew 17  had left home. Nell's mother Cynthia (Lulu) 66 was still living with them.

On Saturday 24 January 1931 Lee had gone to San Antonio Texas. The next day he suffered Acute appendicitis and an appendectomy was performed late that evening. Lee died at 9:30 pm. He was 50 years old. Nellie Grace Hamilton died 27 Sep 1965

Clarence Barnett Hamilton

Born: 7 Mar 1868, Rusk County Texas

Married: Cora Henrie Pegues , 7 Oct 1891, Gregg County Texas 

1900 Census: Clarence &  Cora owned a home in Longview TX on Fredonia St. He was 32, Cora was 27,

Clarence  was working as a druggist. They had one child, Duane Whaley Hamilton  age 7.

His younger brother Ernest Hamilton was also living with them. Earnest was 25 and was working as a physician. Cora died three years later on 27 Dec 1902. She was buried in Longview Texas.

1910 Census: Clarence was 42, widowed, working as a salesman in a dry goods store, he and his 20 year old son Duane were living as boarders with the Heineman family. Duane worked as a delivery carrier.

1920 Census: Nothing had changed for Clarence over the past 10 years. He was still living with the Heineman family as a boarder, and still working in the dry goods department store. Duane had had left for the military because of WWI.

1930 Census: Clarence was now living in boarding house with several other boarders. He was 52, and working in a drug store again as a pharmacist, earning $8,591 per year. This was excellent money in those times, especially when you consider it was during the depression.

On 25 June 1952, nine days before his 60th birthday, Duane Whaley Hamilton, the only child of Clarence Barnett Hamilton, suffered a heart attack and died three hours later. Clarence out lived his wife, his child, and all of his siblings. He died on 12 May 1955. The last of Dr Andrew Rayburn Hamilton's children.
