Emily Hudson
Emily Audrie Hudson was the sixth child of Dr Cuthbert Gibson Hudson and Pheriba Wooten Alford, born in Chambers County Alabama on June 23, 1837.
Fifteen year old Emily married Augustus Erwin when her older sister Martha died. Emily and Gus had three sons, George, Phillip, and Byrant. After Gus died, 19 year old Emily was left to raise her 12 year old nephew/stepson, (Gus & Martha's son) Thomas Cuthbert Erwin along with her three young sons, George 5, Phillip 3, and Bryant 1. According to the 1860 slave schedule, Emily had five slaves, four males, ages 32,27,4,1 and one female, age 20. The slave overseer was George Dickson, a 25 year old from South Carolina.
Emily’s farm was worth $5,000 and her personal value was $6,000.

In 1870, 33 year old Emily was living in New Danville in Rusk County at her mother’s house. (Reference line 12 of the census form) The census taker spelled her name Irwin. This is where she met 43 year old Dr Andrew R. Hamilton. The census shows that Dr Hamilton's family information was entered three spaces before Emily's family, which means that he lived very close to her.
Youngest son Bryant 12 was living with her, however, Augustus 16 and Phillip 14 were living with older brother Thomas Cuthbert Erwin 21 and his new wife Isabella 17, in Smith County. Phillip was
helping TC farm and Augustus was still attending school.

Emily and Dr Hamilton wed on March 10, 1874 and remained in New Danville. They show up in the Gregg County census in 1880, however, this is because when Gregg County was formed in 1873, New Danville became part of Gregg, not Rusk County.

The 1880 Gregg County census shows Emily's son Phillip 24, had given up farming and was living with her now, and studying medicine. Not only was Emily expecting her youngest son, Lee Hamilton, at the time the census were taken on Tuesday, June 1, 1880, she was also sick with pleurisy.
Pleurisy, is inflammation of the membranes that surround the lungs and line the chest cavity. This can result in a sharp chest pain while breathing. Occasionally the pain may be a constant dull ache. Other symptoms may include shortness of breath, cough, fever or weight loss, depending on the underlying cause.
Lee was born 19 days later on June 20, 1880. She had two domestic servants, Henrietta Hudson age 52, and Lizzie Wood age 5. They were both mulatto race.
Emily's age is shown as 37, but she was actually 42. She died less than two years later on March 1, 1882 and is buried in Danville cemetery in Kilgore Texas. She was 43 years old.
Andrew's daughter, Jessie Eliza Hamilton is not listed on the census because she married John G Spear six months earlier on 2 Dec 1879.
